Research paper thumbnail of Re-dating Lapita Movement into Remote Oceania

Journal of Pacific Archaeology, 2015

Understanding the nature and process of initial Pacific settlement by people carrying the Lapita ... more Understanding the nature and process of initial Pacific settlement by people carrying the Lapita culture is ultimately founded upon accurate knowledge of the timing and speed of settlement. This paper reports on re-dating of one of the earliest Lapita sites (SE-SZ-8) from Santa Cruz in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands on the western margin of Remote Oceania. Our results indicate this site is considerably younger than previously believed and comparison of this result to other early Lapita sites suggests initial settlement of Remote Oceania was at not much more than 3000 BP. This would argue for very rapid Lapita settlement of much of the South-western Pacific.

identify several major pottery production areas during the Lapita period. It could be argued that the rise of pottery production traditions at
the northern bank of the Diahot Valley near Ou´egoa/Pou´ebo in the north, and the region between Tontouta and Noum´ea/Saint Louis in the
south, was influential in the formation of the northern versus southern New Caledonian cultural divisions (Sand et al.: 64-5, fig. 11) that
developed at a later date.

Research paper thumbnail of Understanding social connections within the Bismarck Archipelago through petrographic and motif analyses of Mussau Lapita pottery assemblages

Archaeology in Oceania, 2024

Petrographic and motif analyses of Lapita pottery assemblages from the Talepakemalai (ECA), Etako... more Petrographic and motif analyses of Lapita pottery assemblages from the Talepakemalai (ECA), Etakosarai (ECB) and Etapakengaroasa (EHB) Lapita sites of the Mussau Islands help to illuminate the social lives of people living in the Bismarck Archipelago some 3000 years ago. Based on petrographic analysis, these early Mussau Lapita sites acquired pots from many parts of the Bismarck Archipelago, namely the Admiralty Islands, northeast and central north New Britain, northern and southwestern New Ireland and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni (TLTF) chain. None of our petrographic samples indicate sources from southern New Britain, even though ECA shares a high number of motifs with sites in the Kandrian region of southwestern New Britain. There is also no evidence of imports from the northern coast of New Guinea. We suggest that the Mussau Lapita community was linked with at least two possible social networks based on pottery sources, motifs and obsidian distribution patterns.

This study illustrates how such techniques can be employed to review past hypotheses about the migration patterns of prehistoric Oceania, and how such studies can supplement and improve our current understanding of the social relationships between the populations involved. Despite populations settling in the Loyalty Islands early on, our current results indicate that pottery made from this area was not transferred to Grande Terre of New Caledonia, or to the Île des Pins located to the south.

The Loyalty Islands lie between the Vanuatu island chain and the rest of New Caledonia, so it has been suggested that they may have been the first part of New Caledonia to have been colonized during the initial Lapita expansion. We examined 28 sherds by optical petrography, and compared these to archived thin sections of Lapita pottery from the islands of Erromango and Efate in Vanuatu. We also made chemical analyses by neutron activation analysis (INAA) of 11 of these 28 sherds, and later reanalyzed these 11, and 12 more, by inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) analysis as part of the analysis of 329 sherds from throughout New Caledonia. We find no evidence in this sample for the transfer of Lapita pottery from Vanuatu to the Loyalty Islands; the only demonstrably exotic pots are 5 sherds from the main island (Grande Terre) of New Caledonia. Our results offer some support to the view that the initial Lapita expansion was not a continuous wave of advance, but a discontinuous “leapfrogging” process that initially bypassed some island chains. We also note evidence for the existence of at least two mutually exclusive networks of exchange of Lapita pottery in New Caledonia after the initial colonization of the region.

Data generated from 10 major motif themes identified from the Lapita Pottery Online Database are also presented, to strengthen further the hypothesis that a number of motif themes (a given motif and its alloforms) may serve the purpose of being house-or group-specific identity symbols. Current research suggests that the preference to create many regional-specific motifs while continuing to use some shared motifs is a common cultural phenomenon. In a linear diffusion model, the number of shared motifs employed by potters of all regions shows a sharp decline from west to east, with only a small number of motifs continuing to be reproduced as Lapita communities expanded further into Remote Oceania. It also shows that in most cases roughly half of the 'traditionally shared motifs' would be passed on to the neighbouring region located to the east of the previous one. Future examination of these motif themes, such as their temporal and spatial distribution patterns, and the motif construction rules applied by different groups to create alloforms of a certain motif theme, should contribute fruitfully to our understanding of the decorative traditions of the Lapita Cultural Complex.

Research paper thumbnail of Ritually breaking Lapita pots: or, can we get into the minds of Oceanic first settlers? A discussion

Archaeology in Oceania, 2013

One of the striking characteristics of Lapita archaeology during the past century has been the ve... more One of the striking characteristics of Lapita archaeology during the past century has been the very limited number of preserved whole or nearly whole pots found in excavations. This appears odd for ceramics mostly interpreted in the scientific literature as non-utilitarian and carrying social or ritual symbolism. The clear connection between dentate-stamped pots and complex burial rituals at the Teouma site (Vanuatu), along with studies on pottery breakage carried out in other parts of the world, allows the canvassing of a theoretical model that explains the apparent absence of logic in finding numerous Lapita pots reduced to small potsherds. By positioning the analysis in a framework relying on the specific behaviour of Pacific Islanders regarding the "invisible" and by using ethnographic Melanesian rituals as examples of how "natural forces" can be controlled, this paper proposes a hypothetical reconstruction of one of the possible ceremonies that may have been practiced by Oceanic explorers in newly settled islands.

It is argued that the importance and the roles Lapita pottery had in the local communities, in each of these contexts, are quite different from one another, and should be represented as such. Judging from the different production scales and exchange and transfer patterns, the meanings of Lapita pottery also changed depending on the social and economic contexts it was situated in. It has been argued that Lapita pottery might have been employed as a materialized symbol by people coming from different genetic, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, to show their intention to become part of the local community they had just moved into.

Perceived as one of the most significant cultural markers of Austronesian movement into the Pacif... more Perceived as one of the most significant cultural markers of Austronesian movement into the Pacific, Lapita pottery appeared in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea some 3,500 years ago with highly complex decorative motifs and vessel forms. Pacific archaeologists have been using various statistical means to search for patterns from which migration routes and directions may be inferred by comparing frequencies of certain design elements and motifs, as well as motif construction rules, over time and space. How these highly elaborated decorative styles and pottery-making techniques were shared or transformed from one island to another, and how many of these techniques continued to be practiced for many hundreds of years, are intriguing questions whose answers will broaden our understanding of the past. Due to the limitations of previous coding systems and the lack of a fast and reliable communication platform, however, comparison of complex vessel forms and motifs amongst various island groups has been seriously crippled throughout the past few decades.
