on An Unquiet Mind I first read this book just over two years ago at  febobe's urging. I loved it then -as a matter of fact, I loved it enough to use its ideas to base a paper and presentation in an Honors BioSci class (DNA in Everyday Lives, or something like that) because I found it disturbing that my classmates generally held the opinion that the mentally ill aren't really that sick, that they can just get over it if they try hard enough. I wanted to at least introduce doubt into that line of reasoning, if not overthrow it entirely (though I'm not sure I succeeded :p).To me, this book is ( Read more...Collapse ) Current Mood:  contemplative (Comment on this) |

An Unquiet Mind So I said we'd start this what, May 1? I'm only 10 days late. . . . ;) Any thoughts to open us up for discussion on this book? I really found it very powerful and moving, but that may be for personal reasons. I do think Jamison's prose lovely. . .she really has a way of conveying some horrific experiences exquisitely, yet in a highly readable manner. Well, as y'all have prolly noticed, I never opened the March discussion on Alias Grace. . .heck, never posted my response on Autobiog of a Face either. :P Truth told, I'm still trying to get THROUGH AG. :P So. . .I have a question.How would y'all feel about. . .my posting my thoughts on Autobiog once I can, as promised, and us picking up May 1 with a shorter book from one of those we're doing? ie, An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison. We'll run that May 1-June 1, then pick up June 1 with another book. . .and catch up Alias Grace at some point in the game. We'll hit The Dollmaker this summer, I expect, and some others. . . . Just a reminder. . . We will begin discussion of Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood on February 15. Our book for March 15 - April 15 will be Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen. I highly recommend that you also watch the movie of this book - while different, it's definitely worth seeing. Warning: it does contain strong language and extramarital sex as well as some - erm - disturbing content (medical/psyc stuff), but even with that I enjoyed it enough to buy my own copy. :)For those interested, the soundtrack to the movie is also really cool. If you're into reading by music, you might want to look into it. See if you like it in the movie first.I think you'll all enjoy this book. . .it's intense, but it's much slimmer than Atwood, and Kaysen is really a captivating writer, IMO.I have found a fantasy novel - a recommendation from a friend - that I will be evaluating to replace the P.C. Hodgell I originally had on our list, as it's looking like that may be tough to get without going through a lot of used-book-finding hoopla just now. This book is also fantasy with a female protagonist by a female author, but it's much easier to get one's mitts on (right now it's shipping w/in 24 hrs from Barnes & Noble online). A bit late, but... Well, I'm a few days late in bringing this up, but. . .anyone have any thoughts on Autobiography of a Face - or closing thoughts on Girl with a Pearl Earring, for that matter?I'll toss in my feelings about Autobiography once people have had a chance to respond/react/express themselves a bit. . .but let me just say that for me it was an immeasurably powerful book. Girl with a Pearl Earring Other thoughts on this book?I think SurgicalSteel is right in that Griet's fate is sealed from the start. . .but I would toss out this question of relevance: are our choices less sealed today, as women? Give that one some thought before you answer it; I think it's an interesting question. . . .To me, that's why this book was such a hit and resonates so strongly. Discussion Opening So!What did you all think?I'd like to leave it at that for starters and let y'all open the tone of the discussion, whether we want to delve into a cross-sectional approach or a chapter-by-chapter, a more academic or a more relaxed approach to the book. Revised Schedule & An Update OK. . .so it's taken me a bit longer than I planned.I'm going to propose that due to the unforeseen delays plus the holidays, which will inevitably slow up at least a few of us, we take book one a little more slowly than planned, just while we get our sea legs about us. Translation: let's all try to finish reading Girl with a Pearl Earring by December 15th, at which point we can begin discussion. That's how I think we may be doing it - a couple of weeks to read; a couple to discuss, b/c I find it tougher to do the x-number-of-chapters per week thing and don't want us to get into a juggling act. If this proves too troublesome, we'll make some adjustments. :)At this point, we actually have more like 3.5 weeks to read our current book, so this allows a little extra time. For anyone wishing to get a head start after that, our January book will be Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy with an Afterword by Ann Patchett.
