Different from large-scale orchestral music, chamber music is mostly composed for one or several instruments. In addition to requiring musicians to have outstanding personal abilities, they also need to be good at listening to others' performances in order to achieve precise and complete artistic effects. This kind of ensemble is the embryonic form and foundation of a symphony orchestra.
Founded in 1879, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra has always had a tradition of playing chamber music since its establishment. As early as 1920, a special chamber music concert was staged. Artists who have had a profound influence on the development of Chinese symphony, such as Mario Paci, Arrigo Foa, Boris Zakharoff, and Igor Shevtzoff, have all appeared on the chamber music stage. The orchestra didn’t stopped exploring chamber music even at times of war. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the orchestra also held special performances of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak and other composers.
After 1978, with the former president Huang Yijun’s guidance, the Orchestra initiated a chamber music project aiming at raising the musicians’ skill level, and also started the scheduled recitals for “performance reports”, from which to choose the repertoire and musicians for public performances. In 1983, in order to further promote chamber music performances, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra established the "Chamber Music Promotion Association". The main members included the concertmaster Zhang Xilun, the principle flute Tan Mizi, and Wen Tan from Art Research Office. Since then, chamber music concerts have been regularly staged every year; and the brand name "SSO in Chamber" was born. It has landed on the campuses of Fudan University and Jiaotong University, and performed publicly in the Shanghai Concert Hall.
In 1991, the orchestra signed a contract with Jin Jiang Hotel to hold weekend chamber music concerts in the small auditorium every week, providing opportunities for more audiences to experience classical music. In 1997, it has been moved to Jing'an Hotel. Since 2005, it has been stationed in the rehearsal hall at No. 105 Hunan Road (the former site of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra). In 2010, as the orchestra deepened its institutional reform, "SSO in Chamber" grew more mature and professional under the leadership of music director Long Yu. In addition to the assessment of the performance, repertoire, and performers, detailed planning and arrangement of performance frequency, venue layout, and volunteer reception work are also carried out.
The concerts provided a comfortable listening experience while improving the performance level. The "High Standards and Strict Requirements" of "SSO in Chamber" had aroused heated discussion among music lovers. Concert tickets were sold out so rapidly. Even the hallway was fully packed with enthusiastic audience. These vivid scenes have left a deep imprint of SSO in Chamber.
On June 27, 2014, before moving into the new hall, the last performance of "SSO in Chamber" (No. 1257) was filled with audience, marking a successful end to the band’s farewell to the "Hunan Road Era." In September 2014, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra officially moved into its new home - Shanghai Symphony Hall, and started a new cooperation with the hall. As a result, SSH became the permanent home for the orchestra. In addition “SSO in Chamber” also updated its meaning - creating chamber music "stars" while fine tuning the skills of the orchestra members. The “SSO in Chamber” series has become an important part of the orchestra's regular season performances.
For the past four decades, the stage of SSO has recorded the footprints of many famous contemporary musicians in China. Huang Mengla, Sun Yingdi, Song Siheng, Tang Yun, Wang Zhijiong and other performers often appeared on the stage of “SSO in Chamber” when they were young.
In 2020, in response to the cancellation of concerts at SSH due to COVID-19 pandemic, “SSO in Chamber” launched its virtual concerts, without missing a single performance. In the 2020/21 season, “SSO in Chamber” returns with a lineup of twelve shows throughout the year, further exploring the "unpopular" works of well-known composers, excavating and promoting the works of "unknown" composers, and continuing the legacy of 40-year history in music.
With the diversified performance skills and expressive power of the musicians, “SSO in Chamber” has become an important platform for the orchestra to improve its abilities and popularize classical music. With the regular concert schedule, the state-of-the-art audio effect, the comfortable interactive space, the sophisticated playing style, and the customized program per demand, “SSO in Chamber” serves a key role in helping people to escape from the stressful city life, fulfilling their personal aesthetic accomplishments, growing great taste in culture and lifestyle. Nowadays, more and more people choose to meet friends for music on a regular basis, engage themselves in music, interact with musicians, and find their inner peace.
