Purpose This paper aims to systematically map the nature of research in the field of wine tourism... more Purpose This paper aims to systematically map the nature of research in the field of wine tourism experiences and suggest research agenda based on the thematic mapping. Design/methodology/approach A total of 112 articles on wine tourism experiences published between 2000 and 2022 from Scopus and Web of Science databases were analysed. Bibliometric analyses, namely, performance analysis and science mapping, were done using Biblioshiny, an R-tool. Findings The results indicate that post-2015, the subject diversified into specialised sub-themes and empirical studies were widely adopted research methods. International Journal of Wine Business Research emerged as a leading outlet for scholarly publications. The study recommends key research themes for future research in the area. Methodology – A total of 112 articles on wine tourism experiences published between 2000 and 2022 from Scopus and Web of Science databases were analysed. Bibliometric analyses, namely performance analysis and science mapping, were done using Biblioshiny, an R-tool.

Findings –The results indicate that post 2015 the subject diversified into specialized sub themes and empirical studies were widely adopted research methods. IJWBR emerged as a leading outlet for scholarly publications. The study recommends key research themes for future research in the area.

Originality/Value – To the author’s knowledge, this is the first bibliometric analysis-based study on wine tourism experiences. The research agenda discussed can help initiate scholarly discussions in this area.

This has raised some questions pertaining to ethical predicaments in the promotion of wine tourism in Nashik, Maharashtra, given its religious identity. The author, through this qualitative investigation, attempts to (a) review the existing policies imposed on the wine industry in Nashik and its impact on wine tourism development; and (b) explore if the ethical predicaments have any influence on policymaking with respect to the wine industry in Nashik. The tourism industry thrives within a complex environment encompassing sociocultural, economic, ecological, and legal factors. The unique socioreligious and sociocultural fabric of destinations may present complexities in the development of the tourism industry. This explorative study presents an investigation of the interplay between regulatory and ethical factors on wine tourism policymaking.

The purpose of this study is twofold – to provide baseline information to explore interlinkages between wine tourism and wellness and to identify wine tourism experiences that create a sense of wellness among wine tourists. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a netnographic approach by analysing user-generated content collected from the TripAdvisor platform. A total of 2,117 reviews of seven wineries in Maharashtra, India, were coded. Findings Fourteen interpretive codes were identified and positioned within Dunn’s (1959) four dimensions of wellness, namely, body, mind, spirit and environment. The findings suggest that wine tourism experiences allow wine tourists to rejuvenate their mind, body and spirit, enhancing a sense of holistic wellness. Maharashtra, India, were coded.
Findings – Fourteen interpretive codes were identified and positioned within Dunn’s (1959) four dimensions
of wellness, namely, body, mind, spirit and environment. The findings suggest that wine tourism experiences
allow wine tourists to rejuvenate their mind, body and spirit, enhancing a sense of holistic wellness.
Practical implications – Proposed wellness dimensions of the wine tourism framework can be used by
practitioners to enhance the quality and variety of theirwine tourismofferings, extending into the realmofwellness.
Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, based on the literature review, there are few
studies examining wine tourism through the lens of wellness. Also, the study uses Indian wineries as the
study site, offering an insight into tourist experiences of this growing wine tourismmarket.

A matured wine industry is imperative to the growth of wine tourism. India, almost two decades af... more A matured wine industry is imperative to the growth of wine tourism. India, almost two decades after its first international-standard winery was set up, still remains a ‘vast and largely untapped market’ (Gore, 2008). No doubt, the Indian wine industry has seen many a developments in recent years but there exist several impediments to the expected quantum of growth. This paper attempts to give a detailed account and review of the existing policy and regulations by the central as well as the state governments in wine industry in India and their impact on Indian wine tourism. Regulations on Entry, Production, Taxation, Pricing, Distribution and Marketing are the focal points of this paper. The study suggests that, India for a long time had maintained a protectionist attitude towards wine industry imposing multitude of taxes and complex licensing and approval processes, making the growth of the industry somewhat sluggish. Although, in the recent years, many, much anticipated deregulation by the Government were welcomed by the industry, there is need for hard yard measures to raise the wine industry in India to international standards to promote Indian wine tourism experience globally.

Several elements form a part of a much larger wine tourism system and contribute directly and/or indirectly to creating and developing a wine tourism destination. Maharashtra in India has come to be popularly known as the 'wine bowl' of India, producing some of the award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines. This chapter aims to examine all those elements that have played a part in and are necessary to develop a competitive and sustainable wine tourism destination in Maharashtra. The singular objective of this research chapter is to propose a conceptual framework of the wine tourism system. The research largely relies on secondary data as well as results of previous empirical researches conducted by the author. The wider contribution of this chapter lies in developing and illustrating a model of wine tourism system. This system model can be instrumental in defining all those components that are most critical to the growth of a wine tourism destination.

Through this research paper, the author aims to understand the variations presented in defining select terminologies in contemporary research in the domain, so as to be able to establish interlinkages with wine tourism. This theoretical synthesis is exploratory in nature and is based on review of extensive literature in the field of food tourism, culinary tourism, gastronomy tourism and wine tourism. India, almost two decades after its first international-standard winery was set up, still remains a ‘vast and largely untapped market’ (Gore, 2008). No doubt, the Indian wine industry has seen many a developments in recent years but there exist several impediments to the expected quantum of growth. This paper attempts to give a detailed account and review of the existing policy and regulations by the central as well as the state governments in wine industry in India and their impact on Indian wine tourism. Regulations on Entry, Production, Taxation, Pricing, Distribution and Marketing are the focal points of this paper. The study suggests that, India for a long time had maintained a protectionist attitude towards wine industry imposing multitude of taxes and complex licensing and approval processes, making the growth of the industry somewhat sluggish. Although, in the recent years, many, much anticipated deregulation by the Government were welcomed by the industry, there is need for hard yard measures to raise the wine industry in India to international standards to promote Indian wine tourism experience globally.
