The respondents' task was to allocate a resource between the targets in the fairest way. In half of the vignettes the resource was positive (bonus money); in the other half it was negative (reduction in salary). Every combination of sex-of-target was used.

Similar to findings reported for older hearing-impaired students, Ss made more errors with the straight-sided than with the curve-sided containers. Males performed better than females on some item subsets and some evidence for a general practice effect was found. (Author/CL)

Although considerable literature has been published concerning the efficacy and legitimacy of the empowerment evaluation approach, little documentation exists regarding the empirical application of this approach. In this article we discuss, from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, issues related to the evaluator’s role, differences relative to other inclusive evaluation approaches, stakeholder involvement, evaluation context variables, and the concept and practice of empowering program participants via an evaluation approach. Data were gathered to assess how the approach was viewed through the eyes of both the evaluation consumers and the evaluators. Recommendations are discussed regarding the types of circumstances that might most facilitate and support the empowerment evaluation approach.

Considered in these pages are cross-cultural differences in the idea of the person and in models of balancing obligations to the self, family, and community. Revisiting and questioning the concepts of self and self-worth, the authors investigate the extent to which factors traditionally associated with psychological effectiveness (intrinsic motivation; assuming personal responsibility for one's actions; and feeling in control, unique, hopeful, and optimistic) are culturally bound. Hazel Markus and Shinobu Kitayama consider cultural differences in models of psychological agency; Joan Miller critiques the meaning of the term agency, analyzing the extent to which many popular theories in psychology rest on rather narrow Western models of behavior and effective functioning; Steven Heine calls into question the presumed universality of some forms of cognitive ...

The materials were used in conjunction with viewing captioned television programs but are amenable for use with other type of media as well. All the materials were tested with 80 hearing-impaired students from five schools for the deaf around the country. Specific techniques are described and implications for classroom use are discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Giftedness, Sex, and Bottle Shape on Hearing Impaired Adolescents' Performance on the Water Line Task

Gifted Ss performed better on this task than average functioning Ss and the straight-sided containers induced more errors than containers with curved sides, particularly among the average functioning. Ss were 80 female and 40 male undergraduates. Success avoidance was assessed using M. S. Horner's (1968) procedure. Results show that (a) success avoiders did not estimate that their partners, in general, or their male partners in particular, wanted to be with them less socially after success than after failure; (b) there was a nonpredicted main effect in that Ss generally estimated that female partners wanted to be with them socially more than male partners; and (c) success avoiders did not expect that their partners generally, or their male partners specifically, would rate them as less feminine after success than after failure. Research paper thumbnail of The Importance of Choice and Sex in Invasions of Interpersonal Space

Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 1978

ABSTRACT Research on how invasion of personal distance affects subjects' impressions of m... more ABSTRACT Research on how invasion of personal distance affects subjects' impressions of male and female invaders is somewhat contradictory. Jones and Davis's theory of correspondent inferences suggests that the context of choice in which a behavior is enacted is an important determinant of how the perceiver evaluates the actor. To test whether choice context would significantly affect subjects' evaluations of invaders, 48 subjects were spatially invaded by confederates in three types of intentional contexts, and their evaluations of the invaders were obtained. Results showed that choice context was a significant determinant of subjects' evaluations, and that as the invasion appeared more intentional and personnally directed, male invaders were evaluated more negatively and female invaders more positively.

Research paper thumbnail of Fairness and health care decision making: testing the group value model of procedural justice

Tyler and his associates (Lind and Tyler, 1988; Lind and Earley 1992; Tyler, 1989) proposed that this is so because procedural justice serves a group value function. In the present research, we explore aspects of this group value formulation in a real life health care context. Specifically, we assessed the relationship between individuals' appraisals of procedural justice following health care treatment decisions as well ass (i) expectations for different consequences to self; (ii) estimates of how they were viewed by the health care authorities; (iii) attributions about the reasons for their treatment; and (iv) ratings of emotional reactions. Results confirmed many components of the relational, group value model of procedural justice (Lind and Tyler, 1988; Lind and Earley, 1992; Tyler, 1989). Specifically, respondents who felt that they had b...
