Research paper thumbnail of Wilms tumor and the WT1 gene

Experimental cell research, 2001

Multiple genetic loci have been linked to Wilms tumorigenesis; positional cloning strategies have led to the identification of the WT1 tumor suppressor gene at chromosome 11p13. WT1 encodes a zinc finger transcription factor that is inactivated in the germline of children with genetic predisposition to Wilms tumor and in a subset of sporadic cancers. When present in the germline, specific heterozygous dominant-negative mutations are associated with severe abnormalities of renal and sexual differentiation, pointing to the essential role of WT1 for normal genitourinary development. The role of this tumor suppressor in normal organ-specific differentiation is also supported by the highly restricted temporal and spatial expression of WT1 in glomerular precursors of the developing kidney and by the failure of kidney development in wt1-null mice. Of two major alternative splicing products encoded by WT1, the (؊KTS) isoform appears to mediate transcriptional activation of genes implicated in cellular differentiation, possibly also repressing proliferation-associated genes. The (؉KTS) isoform, whose DNA-binding domain is disrupted by the insertion of three amino acids, may be involved in some aspect of mRNA processing. In addition to its function in genitourinary development, a role for WT1 in hematopoiesis is suggested by its aberrant expression and/or mutation in a subset of acute human leukemias. WT1 is also expressed in mesothelial cells; a specific oncogenic chromosomal translocation fusing the N-terminal domain of the Ewing sarcoma gene EWS to the three C-terminal zinc fingers of WT1 underlies desmoplastic small round cell tumor, an abdominal tumor thought to arise from the peritoneal lining. Understanding the distinct functional properties of WT1 isoforms and tumor-associated variants will provide unique insight into the link between normal organ-specific differentiation and malignancy.

Research paper thumbnail of Reduction of blocking artifacts by a modeled lowpass filter output

Circuits and Systems, 2000. …, 2000

The algorithm is based on the filtering of block boundaries. But, the proposed technique is not the actual filtering in the sense that the output is not obtained by multiplying the pixel values with the filter coefficients. Instead of filtering the pixel values through the filter coefficients, the output of the filter is modeled as a typical step response function of the lowpass filter or a functions with similar shapes. Then the blocky signal is just replaced by the modeled output signal which is generated by the library function such as exp or sin. The algorithm can be easily implemented by a lookup-table and very few multiplications, while the objective and subjective performance is comparable to those of other algorithms based on the conventional filtering and POCS (projection onto convex sets).

Research paper thumbnail of Artificial neural network for precipitation and water level predictions of bedup river

… International journal of …, 2007

Studies to predict water level in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia have been actively carried out. However, among problem faced was absent precipitation readings, which inevitably affected water level precipitation accuracies. Backpropagation properties of ANN was used in the study to predict both missing precipitation and water level. ANN model developed in this study successfully estimates missing precipitation data of a recorder in Bedup River, Sarawak with 96.4% accuracy. The predicted values of precipitation were then used to forecast water level of the same gauging station and yielded accuracy value of 85.3%, compared to only 71.1% accuracy of water level prediction with no estimation made to its missing precipitation data. These results show that ANN is an effective tool in forecasting both missing precipitation and water level data, which are utmost essential to hydrologists around the globe.
