The writer deploys a series of postmodern strategies in which both subjects and Spanish Baroque pictorial signs are mobilized and parodied in the same operation as they are relocated onto a specific local urban space: Havana. I propose here that the author includes herself, as Velázquez would do in Las Meninas, not to shed light on representational strategies, but to draw attention to the figure of the migrant writer in a regional linguistic market, who must capture the gaze of Spanish transnational publishers, who exercise a hegemonic control in that market.

It particularly addresses how imagined and lived blackness(es) continue to express life in proximity to death, yet persist in life, as conveyed in the performances of Afro-Cuban artist Carlos Martiel, who resides in the US. His work trespasses the national framework, either regarding Cuba or the United States, to engage in a cross-border solidarity that confronts the realities of black people and other subaltern groups within contemporary global neo-liberalism. Martiel's use of his body as canvas points towards the differentiated histories behind today's migratory movements that bear witness to the perpetuation of unequal guarantees of life, safety and hospitality for non-Western immigrants. I argue that the immediacy of the performance, instead of creating a community of strangers, reveals the fragility of guarantees for non-white bodies subjected to historical violence, and in so doing, his work circumvents the possibility of appropriation by Western audiences of any enduring suffering.

Dissertation supervised by Professor Lillian Manzor No. of pages in text. (235) My dissertation investigates the intermingling of discourses of migration and aesthetics within global market dynamics in the cultural production of late Cuban émigrés in the U.S. and Europe, to whom I refer as “the children of the revolution” —following Mette Louise Berg. I argue that this understudied migratory generation has replaced the diasporic teleology of return of the exile community with other imaginaries. As such, my dissertation sheds light not only on the varying ways of being Cuban in today’s world, but also on the different routes of the children of the revolution in the diaspora. By engaging in a multidisciplinary perspective that involves concepts from diaspora and migration studies in tandem with cultural, literary, and performance studies, I demonstrate how internationalism as an ethical and political ideology predicated by the Cuban revolu...

Ironically, this attitude catalyzed the contamination of disciplines and a spirit of anti-normalization among artists, thus bringing about a dialogue between art, memory, and the historical archive. This article argues that such an integration of artistic codes, along with the recycling of the archive, promoted the role of performance art as a hybrid and contestatory practice par excellence, not only in Havana but in other parts of Cuba as well. Finally, by analyzing the performance piece Ancestros and the play Weekend in Bahia, where Soto returns as set designer, the study emphasizes the potential of art to contest and shape collective memory.
