This testing encompassed the eastern portion of the Oxon Hill Manor site (18PR175) which would be impacted by the Maryland Route 210/1-95 interchange proposed by the State Highway Administration. Architectural features including structural post holes, robbed brick footings, and filled cellar holes were delineated and sampled. Four structural loci were identified representing a minimum of seven structures. Correlation with the historic record suggests these may represent slave quarters and farm buildings. Given the site's excellent integrity, local and regional significance, and potential for addressing important research questions, Oxon Hill Manor is clearly eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Avoidance of the culturally se...

We were not the first archaeologists to look at this site and we could see the evidence of St. Mary’s archaeological predecessors. Dr. H. Chandlee Forman explored the site briefly in the 1960s. The most common artifacts resulting from this previous campaign were cigarette filters. Most were too deteriorated for identification beyond broad functional attribution since they were primarily cellulose, but there were some examples which could be identified. These represented filters from True© cigarettes. True cigarettes utilized an “advanced filter system” that incorporated an element of plastic (see the ad below). According to court records filed as part of one of the massive suits brought under the tobacc...

This long record is summarized with attention focused upon the settlement called Yaocomico that was inhabited in the early seventeenth century. It was at Yaocomico that the newly arrived English colonists first came into sustained encounter with Native people. In a remarkable situation, it was negotiated that half the town was given to the settlers while the Yaocomico continued residing in the other half until the corn harvest. From this peaceful beginning, the interaction between Maryland Indians and the English is briefly traced over the next 70 years. Attention is given to the material evidence of this interaction, especially Native-made tobacco pipes that are found in quantities on English sites from ca. 1640 until about 1675. Finally, recent work on Maryland Indian sites from the late seventeenth and...

Using a standard agricultural assessment, soil phosphate (PO4), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) are mapped to decipher how a landscape was used through time. Both concentrations and absence of these key soil elements are indicative of different types of human intervention. Analysis of soil elements within cultural point-type deposits can also be explored using the standard agricultural assessment. The use of this type of sampling in historical archaeology was pioneered at St. Mary's City. In addition to the utility of soil chemical analysis, the approach's drawbacks and challenges are reviewed.</p>
