Among his numerous publications are The miser's daughter (1842), The court of Queen Anne (1844), South Sea bubbles (1868) and Cardinal Pole (1863). Ainsworth was editor of Bentley's miscellany; editor and proprietor of the New monthly magazine, and in 1842 established Ainsworth's magazine, which came to an end in 1853.
