Hertz, Heinrich, 1857-1894 - Social Networks and Archival Context (original ) (raw ) Heinrich Hertz (b. Feb. 22, 1857, Hamburg, Germany–d. Jan. 1, 1894, Bonn, Germany) was a German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves theorized by James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light. The unit of frequency — cycle per second — was named the "hertz" in his honor.
