Ted Joans (1928-2003) was a musician, surrealist artist, and one of the original beat poets in the early 1950s. Joans was the author of over thirty books of poetry, including Black Pow-Wow: Jazz Poems (1969), A Black Manifesto in Jazz Poetry and Prose (1971), and Wow (1999). He travelled widely in Europe and Africa and kept a home in Tombouctou, Mali. In 2001 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Book Awards.
