Julian E. Butterworth was born in Dow City, Iowa and received A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. He held several teaching and university administrative positions including Dean of the College of Education at the University of Wyoming; Professor of Rural Education at Cornell University, 1919-1952; and director of the Cornell University Graduate School of Education, 1931-1944. He wrote several books and articles including the standard text THE MODERN RURAL SCHOOL.
