James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, was an eighteenth century Scottish judge, scholar of linguistic evolution and philosopher. Part of the Scottish Enlightenment, he lived in Edinburgh but was well-connected with London's literary scene, and corresponded with many European philosophers and scholars.
