Series of letters written to and by Henry Martin during his tenure as Superindendent of Indian Affiairs in the 1860s. Two 1861 lettters to Commissioner of Indian Affairs William P. Dole, both written by Martin in Salt Lake City, include Martin's descriptions of Mormons encamped on Indian Reserve land in Utah (with an "intention to...hold possession"), of conflicts between Ute Indians and white settlers, and of his sending contracts to Jones and Carwright for "freighting United States Indian Goods to the Territory of Utah from...Kansas City," in which he had had been delayed by "the agitated and deplorable state of affairs in Missouri" (also includes two copies of the contract). Another letter (1863) to Dole from another Indian Agent includes notes on his trip to San Francisco, meeting with Nevada governor James W. Nye, and an attempt to make an Indian treaty "during the winter." Two letters from J.F. Greenman in San Francisco to Martin (1863-1864) describe the general success of copper mining, coal mining at Mt. Diablo, ores from the Newton Copper Mine, and stock prices. Also included are a letter to Martin from the Treasury Department with an adjustment of his property account as Superindendent of Indian Affairs in Utah in 1861, and a receipt from the U.S. Treasury for a deposit made by Martin in the amount of $15,783.88.
