Henry Prince was born on January 19, 1811, to Benjamin and Sara Prince, at the village of Eastport on Moose Island, Massachusetts, which later became Eastport, Maine. His family could not afford to send him to college, and he applied to attend Westpoint, the United States Military Academy. He was accepted and attended Westpoint from 1831-1835, after which he entered the army as Brevet 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Infantry Regiment, and was sent to Florida.

Starting on January 10, 1836, Prince began keeping a diary of his daily events during the Second Seminole War, and this diary with accompanying drawings and maps is one of the most significant records of this event. In 1842 he ended his service in Florida, and continued serving in the north. In 1847 he was sent with troops to Mexico. In this conflict he was promoted to captain, but was seriously wounded in battle and sent home from 1847-1850 to recover. He then returned to service, working for the Coast

Survey of Florida for a year. After this, he was sent to Washington to command Fort Steilacoom and serve as paymaster. From 1859-1861, he again had to return home to recover from his previous wound, and in 1861 was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers. The same year, he was wounded in the battle of Cedar Mountain and captured by the Confederates. They released him in December 1861, and he continued to serve as paymaster after the war. In 1869 he became Chief Paymaster, and was promoted to

lieutenant colonel in 1877. He retired in 1879, against his will, and returned to Boston. In 1887 he sailed for Europe, and in 1892 was in London. On August 19, 1892, due to extensive suffering from old wounds and ailments, Henry Prince shot himself in his hotel room.
