Historian, antiquarian, and genealogist of Concord, Mass.; Secretary of Concord Antiquarian Society; editor of New England Farmer. Born in Roxbury, Mass., in 1836; died in Concord, 1909. Attended Harvard College. Married Elizabeth Bartlett Adams in 1861. Compiled catalog of Concord Antiquarian Society holdings, published by Society in 1911. Society also published Tolman's lectures before it, including "John Jack, the Slave, and Daniel Bliss, the Tory" (read 1889, published [1902]). Tolman was chiefly responsible for compiling Concord, Massachusetts, Births, Marriages, and.

Deaths, 1635-1850 (printed 1895). He prepared an annotated manuscript transcription of Concord gravestone inscriptions (the inscriptions copied from the stones 1873, the completed work added to the Concord Free Public Library 1883/84). Father of Adams Tolman, his successor as Secretary of the Concord Antiquarian Society.
