William Johnson (d. Jan. 1864), was a barber and bootblack who worked for President Lincoln for a year before accompanying him to Washington. President Lincoln successfully sought a position for Johnson in the Treasury Department in November 1861, where Johnson was then employed as a laborer and messenger. Johson accompanied President Lincoln to Gettysburg as his presidential valet and probably contracted varioloid about the same time President Lincoln contracted it. Mr. Lincoln recovered, but Johnson did not.
