John Stanton Gould (1812?-1874) was born in Newport, R.I., and educated at the Friends Boarding School in Providence, R.I. After 1827, he was a chemist for a calico print works in Stockport, N.Y., and from 1847 to 1850, he was a member of the N.Y. State Assembly. He was president of the State Agricultural Society and a trustee of Cornell University, 1866-1867. He was also a professor of agriculture at Cornell, 1869-1874. He died at Hudson, N.Y.
