Prominent Midland attorney, philanthropist, and civic leader Gilbert A. Currie was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1909 to 1915. He served as speaker in 1913 and 1914. He was elected as a Republican to two terms in the U.S. Congress, serving from 1917 to 1921. Upon an unsuccessful bid for re-election in 1920, Gilbert Currie returned full time to his law practice as counsel for Dow Chemical Company in Midland.

Born in 1882 in Midland Township, Midland County, Currie was educated in district schools and was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1905. Gilbert Currie and his wife, the former Charlotte B. Chapman, had three children, Gilbert, Jean and Kathryn E. Gilbert Currie's involvement in politics began at the age of twenty-three when he was elected supervisor of his township and served three consecutive terms. In 1908 he was elected chairman of the board. During and following his terms in Congress, Gilbert Currie served as legal counsel for Herbert Dow and Dow Chemical Company. He died in 1960.
