George Wilfred Lambert Townsend was born on 5th April, 1896, and educated at Trinity Grammar, Melbourne. He joined the Australian administration in New Guinea in 1921, worked as a Patrol Officer, and was Senior District Officer when he joined the Australian forces in 1942. He founded the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit, and later with the rank of Major, took responsibility for the Far Eastern Liasion Office (F.E.L.O.), and the Allied propaganda unit. From 1946 to 1956, Townsend worked with the U.N. Trusteeship Council as an Area Specialist for New Guinea.

Townsend was born in Sandgate, Queensland and educated at Trinity Grammar School, Melbourne. He served in the A.I.F. in World War I and joined the Mandated Territory Service as patrol officer in 1921. In 1941 he joined the Army and served as Lieutenant-Colonel in the South-west Pacific, engaged in intelligence and propaganda work among native peoples.
