Dahlov Ipcar, nee Zorach, was born November 12, 1917, in Windsor, Vermont. Her parents, William and Marguerite, were both artists; from childhood Dahlov was drawn to art. She attended Oberlin College in 1933-34, and in 1936 married Adolph Ipcar. Dahlov Ipcar began exhibiting her art work in 1939, and throughout her long and prolific career as author and illustrator of children's books has continued to paint and exhibit.

She illustrated Margaret Wise Brown's The Little Fisherman published in 1945, and along with other of Brown's illustrators and editors, was honored with the 1984 Kerlan award. In 1947 she published her first book for children, Animal Hide and Seek. Throughout her career she has produced a number of picture books that focus on animals, especially farm animals. She has also produced a number of books that deal with the sea and fishing. She has written both fiction and non-fiction for older children and young adults. Her book, Horses of Long Ago traces the history of horses and how they have been utilized by different peoples at different times.

Dahlov Ipcar has also written several young adult novels that draw on her knowledge of English and Scottish ballads and legends, such as the Elf Child and Tam Lin. These books have been praised by critics for their subtle use of language and imagination to create stories that retain both the beauty and cruelty of traditional fairy and folk tales, as well as providing emotional depth and meaning.
