Henry S. Lucas was born and raised near Holland, Michigan. He attended the Universities of Leiden and Ghent. He received his A.B. from Olivet College (1913) and his doctorate from the University of Michigan (1921). He taught history at the University of Washington and has written several books and articles on the medieval history of the Low Countries. In 1955, he published Netherlanders in America; Dutch Immigration to the United States and Canada, 1789-1950 .
