Reverend Richard Furman, Jr. was born October 10, 1815 in Sumter, South Carolina. He was the seventh child of Wood Furman and Hannah Bowers. He was related to the noted Baptist minister and Revolutionary War patriot Rev. Dr. Richard Furman (1755-1826). He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1839, and taught and served as the principal for a preparatory school in Tuscaloosa. He married Margaret Anna Eliza Cammer also of Sumter on April 13, 1841. She was a devout Christian and prolific writer. They both died in Tuscaloosa, she in 1862 and he in May of 1883.
