James William Davenport Seymour (1895-1976) was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University in 1917. Seymour worked with Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., on the Business School film lecture series, while serving as Harvard Universitys director of Publicity. In 1927, Kennedy hired Seymour to serve as an assistant at the Film Booking Offices (FBO). After working as a screenwriter for Warner Brothers in the early and mid-1930s, Seymour accompanied Kennedy to the American Embassy in London as secretary and press attaché.
