Warde was born on Feb. 23, 1851 in Wardington, Oxfordshire, England; attended the City of London School, studied law, then went on the stage; first appeared on stage in a minor part in Macbeth at the Lyceum Theatre, Sunderland, England in 1867; played in successive seasons at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, the Amphitheatre, Leeds, and the Princess Theatre, Manchester; came to the US in 1874; became a leading man in Booth's Theatre in NY, supporting Edwin Booth and John McCullough, and starring in many of the great tragedies; became a lecturer on Shakespeare and other subjects; published books include The fools of Shakespeare (1913) and Fifty years of make-believe (1920); he died on Feb. 7, 1935.
