W. Ross Yates, born in Corvallis, Oregon, received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. from Yale. He taught political philosophy and related subjects at Kenyon College, the University of Vermont, and Lehigh University, where he served on the faculty for 31 years, nine of them in the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Science. He is the author of Joseph Wharton: Quaker Industrial Pioneer (Lehigh University Press, 1987), and is editor of and contributor to Bethlehem of Pennsylvania: The First One Hundred Years (1968) and Bethlehem of Pennsylvania: The Golden Years, 1841-1920 (1976). He has also published articles and poems on his favorite sport, road running. He lives in McMinnville, Oregon.
