Abstract

Consists chiefly of correspondence, organizational records, speeches, blueprints, notes, telegrams, calling cards, newspaper clippings, and other materials pertaining to the organization and administration of the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915. Correspondence addresses general and legal issues, as well as national and international lobbying efforts for PPIE to be held in San Francisco. Major correspondents include: Ira E. Bennett, Julius Kahn, George A. Bartlett, W.B. Egilbert, Theodore Hardee, Herbert E. Law, William H. Crocker, and Charles C. Moore, president of the Panama Pacific International Exposition Company. Organizational records include articles of incorporation, memoranda, subscription lists, and other papers. Includes two scrapbooks, scrapbook material, and a bound report of the Commission Extraordinary to Europe, a 1912 delegation to Europe, led by Hale for the purpose of gaining international support for PPIE. Includes material relating to Hale's other major civic projects: the Committee on Commercial Relations, formed for a 1908 tour of Japan sponsored by the Western States Chamber of Commerce; the Pacific Ocean Exposition Company (1904-1909), a predecessor of the Panama Pacific International Exposition Company; the Calif. Tax Commission (1927-1943); and the San Francisco Shopping News Company (1925-1932).
