H. Rodney Sharp was born on July 30, 1880. On June 6, 1908, he married Isabella Mathieu du Pont, the daughter of Lammot du Pont, Sr., thus becoming the brother-in-law of Pierre S., Henry B., Irénée, and Lammot du Pont, the leading figures in E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Marian Coffin was a landscape architect. She entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a special student in 1901 and graduated in 1904 with a concentration in fine arts and landscape design. She studied under Boston architect Guy Lowell, designer of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Also in 1904, Coffin opened her own professional landscape practice in New York City.
