Born in Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1941, Richard A. Gephardt was first elected to Congress in 1976. He made two unsuccessful runs for the presidency, once in 1988 and again in 2004, and served until that same year. Jean Jacques Alexandre Alfred Mouton was the son of Governor Alexander Mouton of Louisiana and his first wife, Zelia Rousseau. He was a colonel in the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment and a brigade commander under General Richard Taylor. He was killed at the Battle of Mansfield, April 8, 1864. William Arceneaux was born in Scott, La., on August 19, 1941. He received a B.A. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (1962) and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University (1965, 1969).
