Led by George Armstrong Custer, the Seventh Cavalry surprised an encampment of Cheyenne near present-day Cheyenne, Okla., on Nov. 27, 1868. Whitside entered the U.S. Army in 1858 and was in 6th Cavalry till 1861. Promoted to Captain (1866), Major, 7th Cavalry (1885), Lt. Colonel, 3rd Cavalry (1895), Colonel, 10th Cavalry (1898), Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers (1901). Reverted to Colonel, 10th Cavalry and became Brigadier General, U.S. Army, (1902).
