James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R. Osgood & Co. which was associated with many fine writers. The firm struggled financially, and when Osgood stepped down, was dissolved into Houghton, Mifflin. From the description of James R.
