Abstract

Expressing regret that he cannot send New Year's gifts worthy of her but, "ayant donné mission à messieurs les dilettantis [sic] de Moscou de vous en offrir," he has heard from his friend Elkan that those gentlemen have acquitted themselves most graciously and generously, saying that no one is a prophet in his own land but that in his own he has not been permitted to put himself forward as a composer, but that the impresario in Brussels would be disposed to advance Duprez's career and to mount the "grand ouvrage" parts of which Patti has heard, saying that all he lacks is money, etc.

Adelina Patti was one of the most highly regarded opera singers of the 19th century. From the description of Adelina Patti letters, 1889-1891. (Louisiana State University).
