Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. (17 August 1896 – 13 July 1970) was a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II. The son of a U.S. Army chaplain, Groves lived at various Army posts during his childhood. George Samuel Neel was born in 1842 near Decatur, Ohio. He married Kentucky schoolteacher Minerva Glass in 1866, and had eight children. Neel enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1864 and served in Company A of the 70th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. After service with Generals Logan and Sherman, and participating in the Atlanta Campaign, he was honorably discharged. Neel died in 1931 in Webster City, Iowa. From the description of G.S.
