Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. (17 August 1896 – 13 July 1970) was a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II. Jennerjohn (b. 1922) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from high school in 1940 and attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering for two years before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army; however, he was invited by General Groves to join the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos in 1945.
