Abstract

Accession no. 04-1 consists of biographical information about departmental faculty, correspondence, membership lists, clippings, and subject series, including material related to the department's centennial celebration, as well as personal papers of Arthur Kruckeberg, a past chair of the department. Accession 04-34 contains mostly minutes of staff meetings and the correspondence of departmental chairs, as well as historical features, the department newsletter, Compost, and information regarding a contemplated merger of the botany and zoology departments in 1971.

Prior to 1900, indivdual botany courses occasionally appeared in the University of Washington catalog. In 1900 the botany department was formally established with H.R. Foster serving as Chair and the sole faculty member. Science Hall (now Parrington Hall) was constructed in 1902 and the third floor, complete with lecture hall, lab space, and an herbariium, was reserved for the Botany Department.
