George Washington Cable, an American author and critic, was born in New Orleans and fought for the South in the Civil War. His first collection of tales of life in the south was Old creole days (1879). In 1884 he went on a reading tour with Mark Twain. He moved to Northampton, Mass., in 1885. James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R.
