Abstract

Copy made by Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler in a calligraphic hand, of the following poems by Goethe: Zueignung (Der Morgen kam); Euphrosyne; Alexis und Dora; Römische Elegien (Roman Elegies) numbers I (Saget, Steine, mir an), V (Froh empfind' ich mich nun), and VII (O, wie fühl' ich in Rom mich so froh); Venezianische Epigramme (Venetian epigrams), numbers 8 (Diese Gondel vergleich' ich), 7 (Eine Liebe hatt' ich), 28 (Welch ein Mädchen), 34b (Klein ist unter den Fürsten Germaniens freilich der meine), 96 (Glänzen sah ich das Meer), and 101 (Ach! mein Hals ist ein wenig geschwollen); Erste Epistel (only in part, approximately the second half); Zweite Epistel; and Schweizer Alpe. Most of the text is in black ink, with initials of stanzas generally in red and sometimes adorned with thread-like strokes. Initials of poems are embellished with tendril-like swirling patterns in combinations of 2 colors or 2 shades of the same color, using blue, red, and gold ink. In several instances, the first or last stanza of a poem is entirely in red or blue. The manuscript comprises 3 folio-size gatherings (of 6, 4, and 3 bifolia, respectively), enclosed within an additional gathering of 3 bifiolia, and is continuously paginated. The title Zueignung appears twice at the front (f. 1r, 2r); and there is a table of contents at the back. The manuscript is undated but belongs to a collection of manuscripts that Frenzel-Koehler sent to Ernst Jockers (Ms. Coll. 785), of which the other 9 manuscripts are dated from 1948 to 1950.
