Abstract
To amuse the stubborn Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy, who refuses to allow the court musicians to return to Vienna at summer's end, Joseph Haydn composes a special "Farewell" symphony. The collection includes five pages of correspondence, seven pages of notes, ten pages of research materials, a 50-page ink-wash-pencil dummy with text proof pasted in, eighty-three pencil studies, thirteen ink and wash studies.

Possibly composed by 1778-79. This symphony exists in several different versions. This edition is based on parts published by Siéber, Paris, 1786, which lack the minuet and trio listed in Hoboken.--Cf. Fleisher Collection. After winning the Prix de Rome, working free lance and as a visiting professor, Joseph Leon Lasker began illustrating Miriam Schlein books in the 1960s.
