Elizabeth Stuart Phelps was an American author and intellectual. Born Mary Gray, she changed her name to Elizabeth Stuart to honor her mother after her death, and began publishing stories, essays, and poems, eventually publishing fifty books and countless articles. Many of her works explore women's interactions in family and community, and the moral dilemmas in a world where women's roles were changing. Mary Noilles Murfree, author, was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on 24 January 1850, and died there on 31 July 1922. She never married and was first published in 1873.
