Abstract

Personal and official papers of Joseph S. Palmore together with family correspondence, business and legal papers, Bible records and ambrotypes. Business and legal papers contain accounts, receipts, promissory notes, deeds, a land plat, and tobacco receipts. Several items pertain to slavery, particularly hiring and sales, a whipping, and overseer accounts. Civil War items include a tax-in-kind receipt, a conscription exemption, a substitute acknowledgement, and an oath of allegiance. Topics and items of note in the correspondence include life of Mississippi settlers; slavery, including a reference to the loss of 18 slaves to cholera; crops and prices; a crippled child as God's judgment; banking affected by the Mexican War; prison life, 1864-1865, in Point Lookout, Md., and Elmira, N.Y.; Reconstruction including the death of General Hindman, and the black vote in the 1869 Virginia gubernatorial race. In addition the collection contains rosters, returns, commissions, orders, and other material, 1836-1844, from the 17th regiment, Virginia militia; lists of court cases, bills, levies, summonses, and other papers, 1839-1846, from the Cumberland County Court; Bible records and Palmore genealogy; papers, 1956-1958, regarding the settlement of the estates of Charlie Ben Palmore and Sarah Palmore, and three ambrotypes. Correspondents include Lucy Ann Allen Palmore Gauldin, William James Palmore, Charles Benjamin Palmore, Martha J. Phillips Palmore and Thomas S. Bocock.
