In 1919, some Chicago White Sox players intentionally lost the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. As compensation, some of the players received cash payments from gamblers. Rumors of a conspiracy circulated immediately following Cincinnati's victory, but the scandal broke publicly in September 1920. Jacob Ellsworth Daubert was born April 7th, 1884 in Shamokin, PA to Jacob and Sarah Daubert. At age eleven Jake entered the coalmines, working with his father and brothers. He was able to escape a life in the mines when he signed a contract with a semi-professional team in Lykens, PA. He started out as a pitcher as many ballplayers do but quickly was moved over to the first sack.
