Biographical information; correspondence, chiefly letters received from publishers, readers, and friends regarding his books Clear the Bridge! and WAHOO, 1977-1991; writings include his 1931 midshipman's cruise diary and holograph drafts and typescripts of WAHOO, 1931-1987; subject files include background materials on the TANG and WAHOO used in writing his books as well as legal documents and patents for his inventions: pressure differential valve, pre-start lube injector, ball joints, and tripod construction; miscellany includes newspaper clippings, publishers' contracts, photographs, maps, charts, and diagrams of the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean area, 1949-1993.

Richard Hetherington O'Kane, U.S. Naval officer, was born in 1911 in Durham, New Hampshire. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1934 and attended Submarine School. Her served in the submarines WAHOO and TANG during World War II, and together they sunk 55 Japanese vessels, one of the top records of all time. When TANG was sunk, he was captured by the Japanese and held in a prison camp until VJ Day. He received the Medal of Honor in 1946. O'Kane attended the Naval War College and retired f...
