The Beauty of the Public Domain This is absolutely wonderful. The Last Mechanical Monster follows up sixty four years after the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoon, "The Mechanical Monsters", which I remember from being on an 8 Hours of cartoons tape we had when I was a kid. They fell into the public domain, even if Superman, Lois, etc, haven't yet, so aren't owned by DC.I had never heard of until today, despite being nominated for an Eisner Award. Written and drawn by David Feis, of Mom's Cancer and Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow. It's amazing, and everything I could ever want it to be. This is my unsurprised face for it being nominated for the Eisner award. Though I'm still kinda weirded out in a good way when webcomics are nominated.Seriously go read it, start at the very beginning for the recap of the Superman cartoon(h/t Metafilter for pointing me at this bit of amazingness) (Comment on this) |

It's time to share a comic *Tap tap tap* Is this still on?So, let me share with you a comic that I found. I give you Decrypting Rita (some bits may be slightly NSFW), which is still ongoing. A comic which first, was good enough to make me read it all the way through, then second, good enough it got me to dust off this old thing to see if anybody was still here to tell about it. If not I'll have to go get one of those tumblrs the kids are so into these days.Decrypting Rita reminds me in many ways of A Miracle of Science, both have far future sci-fi settings with a lot of the same kinds of vaguely post-Singularity technology.First, it's one of the few comics I've seen that does the infinite canvas type stuff horizontally, rather than vertically. Most web displays and reading habits make vertical scrolling easier. I found it easiest to read the comic with the web browser set into full screen mode, so the top and bottom wasn't cut off. But the horizontal scrolling works well with the chapters that aren't set up as typical panels, it helps provide a sense of speed and flow to it.The second thing to note are the colors and art styles, which are both used to keep different parts of the story visually distinct, even when they are literally intertwining. Which leads to the next part, the story. I don't want to go into too much detail to avoid spoilers, but in the very first chapter, there's the reveal that there's multiple universes, which vaguely parallel each other, since basically the same people are in them in basically the same relationships. I'm not certain yet if they're all really real, or if they're all reflecting some other reality, or if it's some of both, since by the point the comic is up to now, they have all crossed over with at least one other, so they're all at least equally real. The comic is just now coming up to what looks like a climax in the last updates, so we'll see what the author says it is soon enough.So anyway, go read Decrypting Rita. BTW Terinu is back online After a two year hiatus and a complete rebuild of the website, Terinu is back online and reposting the old pages every Mon-Wed-Fri as  chaypeta finishes inking Chapter 24 completely to build up a nice buffer. For those just being introduced to it, now is a great time to start archive diving, since the first six issue story arc is up completely and we're just getting into Issue Seven.Besides, how many other webcomics get fanvids made out of them? Technical Difficulties I am about at my wits end trying to figure this out, so I thought I'd turn to the Snarkoleptics community to see if anyone else is experiencing this problem or knows how to fix it.Basically, I cannot, at all, in any way shape or form, get to new.websnark.com. If I try and load it up, it gives me an error. It doesn't matter if I'm using firefox or IE, it still comes back as a dead link. I can access the cached version of the website through Google, and I can somehow get back to a few older articles, but nothing current. Basically, I get the feed via LJ, click on a link and get a non-page. Anyone have any idea how or why this is happening, and better yet, how to fix it? | _8:49 pm_[miyaa99] | Sex, Relationships and High School If there is one thing about Campbell's works, it's how unvarnished his webcomics are. I point to the latest episode in the webcomic version of Degrassi High School: Penny and Aggie as an example. The two headline girls, finally have sex without being caught by either of their parents. But it just seems to me to be rather unromantic. Penny, for instance, heavily flirts with Aggie while helping her pick out garments from where she works over the summer. Twice, the couple wrestle with Aggie noting in the second time that she felt that Penny got some thrill out of it. But neither girl seems to be satisfied by the sex or the relationship even though both have warmed up to it. Even the Archie-like kiss seemed to be forced in a way. Even the first time they tried to have sex and the talk they had with both parents seem rather...odd.Other relationships seem to be falling apart or just plain weird. Sara is falling apart. Jack and Katy-Ann enjoyed themselves in a round of mutual masturbation that just seems to be out of either one's character (Jack would have gone all the way and Katy-Ann wouldn't have gone at all.) The lone "friends with benefits" couple, Lisa and Stan, seems to be the happiest.If Campbell was trying to present how uncomfortable growing up is, he certainly succeeded. It's not as suave as the Gunnerkrigg Court group where there is an comfortably and ease with the teens even when they have some difficulties with their own relationships.And I'm not saying this is a bad thing of Campbell. There is a compelling element to Penny & Aggie's characters' struggles as there is a compelling element to the ease and fantasies of Gunnerkrigg Court's characters. It makes it difficult to watch the carnage, however. He's good with train wrecks. (Comment on this) |

Snarkolia's Most Wanted (Fugitives From Justice) Just wanted to get more perspectives on a theme.What characters in webcomics today are fugitives from justice? Three off the top of my head are Kharisma Valetti (with Fluffmodeus in tow) in Something*Positive, Blaine O'Malley in Shortpacked! and the entire crew of the starship Outcast in Angels2200. Recent webcomic finds... What with one thing and another (especially looking at bidders on WLP's ad space), I've noticed some webcomics that had, up to now, escaped my notice. Crazyghost Comics - Well... boob jokes. And that's pretty much it. But I like it anyway. It's in my "Trial Basis" folder, and I've run some ads there... and will run ads for Secret Project Coming Jan. 1.Three Panel Soul - I'm... not decided one way or the other yet on this one. But it intrigues me. Also in my Trial Basis folder.Atomic Laundromat - THIS one, on the other hand, went STRAIGHT to my regular read (M-W-F) list. Superheroes as I think they should be done, i. e. mocked mercilessly. Plus EXCELLENT artwork. Unlike the other two, which I'm still a bit waffly on, I wholeheartedly recommend, without reservation, this webcomic. READ IT. (3 Comments |Comment on this) |

| _2:49 pm_[miyaa99] | Brief Thoughts I'm getting used to webcomic's merchandise be seen in mainstream movies, especially Diesel Sweetie. However, apparently, Kate Beaton's Fat Pony is getting a shout-out of sorts on Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. I'm waiting for the next big step: a major motion picture movie based off of a webcomic. I love Tweep. It's somewhat a rather subtle comedy that is wonderfully drawn and is a nice alternative to Questionable Content. Currently the story line is about a competition between two introverts for a position with Brew You. My mind has the He's Going the Distance song playing as these two battle it out. And well, it also has a bunny mascot.The other webcomic that I'm loving a lot is Ginger's Bread. Not quite as well drawn, it does have a pretty well-developed storyline and the characters. It's basically about a girl name Ginger, who when decides to go into business for herself with her über skills as a baker.So, the latest chapter of Gunnerkrigg Court is an emotional pendulum swinging from love to hate, fear and loathing, and everything else inbetween. I'm emotionally tired just reading the chapter, but is a marvel to view. Tom Siddell should be on some short list for the best drawn web-comic. (Please let Kat hit Antimony with a clue by four.)I really need to find new webomics to read. Anyone have any recommendation for a webcomic which has just been online in the past year?
