SAMPLE Jejunal specimens from 10 dogs. PROCEDURES Jejunal segments (50 cm) were harvested immediately prior to euthanasia from 10 mixed-breed dogs Specimens were harvested with the orad and aborad ends clamped and stored in saline (0.9% NaCl) solution-soaked towels during instrumentation. Three jejunostomy tubes were placed via 3 techniques (pursestring, Witzel, and seromuscular incision), and 2 double lumen central venous catheters were placed at each intestinal end for luminal filling and leak testing. Intestinal luminal area was measured ultrasonographically with specimens suspended in a warm undyed saline solution bath with the intestinal lumen filled with dyed saline solution (intraluminal pressure, 6 mm Hg). Leak testing was performed by means of infusion of dyed saline solution (4 mL/min) until each jejunostomy site failed. Intestinal luminal area and leakage pressure were compared between the 3 tube placement techniques. RESULTS The Witzel and seromuscular incision techniques decreased the intestinal luminal area measured at the tube insertion site, albeit nonsignificantly. For the seromuscular incision technique, a significant decrease in intestinal luminal area at the intraluminal site of measurement was found. For 2/30 specimens (1/10 pursestring and 1/10 seromuscular incision), failure occurred at pressures within the range of previously reported peak peristaltic pressure for dogs. Failure occurred at supraphysiologic peristaltic pressures for the remaining 28 specimens, including all 10 specimens for the Witzel technique. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In this in vitro study, all specimens for the Witzel technique withstood physiologic peristaltic pressures during leak testing. Both tunneling techniques (Witzel and seromuscular incision) created a decrease in intestinal luminal area. Further investigation, including in vivo testing, is indicated to evaluate the clinical relevance of these findings.

This investigation was designed as a case-control study. All cases (n=42) of undernutrition were included, and a sample of 52 controls was randomly selected from the study population. The frequency of investigated exposure factors was compared between cases and controls by using logistic regression. Undernutrition was associated with child's age (> 36 months old; OR = 3.53; 95% CI = 1.04, 18.40) and mother's marital status (married; OR = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.09, 0.90). The odds of undernutrition were 2.81 times higher in children infected with Giardia spp, but this association was not significant (P = 0.18) after controlling for child's age and mother's marital status. In conclusion, child's age and mother's marital status were associated with child undernutrition in study subjects. Futures studies on undernutrition in children should examine more carefully how mother's marital status alone or in combination with other factors (e.g. socio-economic, psychological factors) can influence child nutrition.

It is prescribed against protozoal infestations and is widely used in Mexico as well as other underdeveloped countries where infectious diseases are the first cause of children mortality. The drug is a direct mutagen in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 strain and the presence of S9 mixture did not modify its mutagenic effect. At low doses no mutagenicity was detected with strains TA100NR, TA98 or UTH8414 (Uvr+ derivative of TA100). Urine from four patients under tinidazole treatment exhibited a mutagenic activity on strain TA100, greater than the expected from the tinidazole concentrations determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Components from the urine samples were separated on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates, and their mutagenic effects tested by direct application of the Salmonella assay onto sections of the developed chromatoplate. The Rf of one component (0.62) corresponded to the one obtained for a tinidazole standard and showed the expected mutagenicity, while a second component with an Rf=0.39, exhibited a mutagenic potency slightly greater than the observed for tinidazole; however, as in the case of the drug itself, reduction of the nitro group was necessary for a mutagenic activity.

Twenty-two of 24 fractures with sufficient follow-up radiographic evaluation obtained union. Time to radiographic union ranged from 25 to 280 days (mean +/- standard deviation [SD] 110+/-69 days; median 98 days). Eleven animals developed minor and two dogs developed major pin and/or wire tract inflammation. Functional outcome was rated as excellent (n=16), good (n=5), and fair (n=3) at the time of final long-term assessment (range 4.5 to 60.0 months; mean +/- SD 28.4+/-15.4 months; median 28.5 months). Follow-up information was unavailable for two animals. Hybrid fixators were useful constructs for stabilization of humeral and femoral fractures, particularly fractures with short, juxta-articular fracture segments.

Paravertebral block (PVB) with infusion of local anaesthetic (LA) through a paravertebral cathete... more Paravertebral block (PVB) with infusion of local anaesthetic (LA) through a paravertebral catheter is an effective alternative to epidural analgesia in the management of post-thoracotomy pain. PVB can be done in two ways: either through administration of a bolus dose of the LA or continuous infusion via an infusion pump; currently, there is no consensus on which route is best. Our objective was to compare the efficacy of the PVB for post-thoracotomy pain control using bolus doses versus a continuous infusion pump. We performed a prospective randomized study of 80 patients submitted to thoracotomy. Patients were divided into two independent groups (anterior thoracotomy-ANT-and posterolateral thoracotomy-POST). At the conclusion of the surgery, a catheter was inserted under direct vision in the thoracic paravertebral space at the level of the incision. In each group, patients were randomized to receive levobupivacaine 0.5% every 6 h ('Bolus' group) or levobupivacaine 0.25% in ...

Anecdotally, this sign has been thought to be related to biatrial enlargement and also to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, to our knowledge, there has been no study performed to assess the association between cardiac chamber enlargement and cardiac disease with the 'valentine'-shaped heart. The aim of this study was to verify the association between the…

This vaccine was tested on 30 heifers during a 7-mo period. The 30 heifers were randomly assigned to three groups of 10 heifers each. The prepartum group received two injections of the vaccine at 8 and 4 wk before calving, and the postpartum group received two injections at 1 and 5 wk after calving. The control group received two injections of a placebo at 8 and 4 wk before calving. The vaccine or the placebo was administered subcutaneously in the brachiocephalicus muscle of the neck. The frequencies of intramammary infections caused by Staph. aureus were reduced from 18.8% for heifers in the control group to 6.7 and 6.0% for heifers in the prepartum and postpartum groups, respectively. This protective effect was maintained for at least 6 mo. The relative risk of mastitis caused by Staph. aureus was 0.31 and 0.28 for heifers in the prepartum and postpartum groups, respectively, compared with that for heifers in the control group. The results of the trial indicated the effectiveness of the vaccine in decreasing the incidence of intrammammary infections caused by Staph. aureus. A slight but nonsignificant increase occurred in fat production in the milk of vaccinated cows. The vaccine had no observable effect on somatic cell count or streptococcal infections.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cryopreservation of bull spermatozoa on the integrity of the PT and the relationship between PT integrity and semen characteristics. Semen from seven bulls was evaluated before and after cryopreservation, comparing the integrity of the plasma membrane (hypo-osmotic test), percentage of live and dead spermatozoa (triple stain), acrosome integrity (triple stain) and the integrity of the PT (negative stain by electron microscopy). Cryopreservation of bull semen caused substantial damage to the PT; the proportion of spermatozoa with a damaged PT was 15.2% versus 52.5% (P < 0.05) in fresh versus frozenthawed spermatozoa, respectively. Furthermore, on average, 67.4% (range, 64-72%) of fresh spermatozoa were live, compared to 53.1% (range, 49-58%) for frozen-thawed spermatozoa; there was an inverse correlation between the percentage of live spermatozoa and the percentage with damage to the PT. Although 59.1% of frozen-thawed spermatozoa had an intact acrosome, only 43.7% of them still remained alive. In frozen-thawed semen, there was a high correlation (r = 0.69) between live spermatozoa with an intact acrosome and spermatozoa that maintained an intact PT. In conclusion, freezing/thawing of bull spermatozoa altered the PT and maintaining PT integrity may be necessary to maintain acrosome integrity. #

This concept is rather general and has been applied for the activation of vinyl sulfones and N-sulfonyl imines, as well as in the direct C‒H functionalization of N-H heterocycles. In particular, this kind of coordinating group has played a key role in the enantioselective Rh-catalyzed addition of boronic acids and Cu-catalyzed reduction of 2-pyridyl vinyl sulfones, the Cu-catalyzed addition of organozinc reagents, and the direct Mannich reaction of glycinate imines to N-heteroarylsulfonyl imines. In addition, a general procedure for the Pd-catalyzed C-2 alkenylation of N-(2-pyridylsulfonyl)indoles and pyrroles has been developed.

This increase is not re¯ected in variations of the linear amount of TJ nor in changes of the pattern of junctional strands as observed in freeze fracture replicas, nor in the distribution of claudin 1 (a membrane protein of the TJ) nor ZO-1 (a TJ-associated protein). A preliminary characterization of the active component of DLU indicates that it weighs 30±50 kDa, bears a net negative electric charge, and is destroyed by type I protease but not by 10-min boiling. DLUs prepared from human, dog, rabbit and cat are eective on MDCK cells. However, dog DLU increases TER in MDCK (dog) as well as LLCPK 1 (pig) monolayers, but not in other epithelial cell lines such as LLCRK 1 (rabbit), PTK 2 (kangaroo) and MA-104 (monkey), nor in the endothelial cell line CPA 47 (cow). Given that in its transit from the glomerulus to the urinary bladder the ®ltrate increases its concentration by more than two orders of magnitude, the substance(s) we report may act at increasingly higher concentrations in each segment, and aord a potential clue to the progressive increase of TER across the walls of the nephron from the proximal to the collecting duct.

In this condition, the extrahepatic and the intrahepatic obstruction of the portal vein, due to chronic liver disease, produce a more severe form of hemorrhagic portal hypertension that is more difficult to control. The results of surgical treatment (modified Sugiura-Futagawa operation) in this subset of patients is analyzed.

Research paper thumbnail of Coordinating Sulfonyl Substrates in Metal-Catalyzed Reactions

Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon and the Related Elements, 2011
