7-Zip Open Discussion: clear "folder history" (original) (raw)
A free file archiver for extremely high compression
clear "folder history"

Most users probably aren't even aware the 7-Zip automatically recorders a history of every archive you open! It's in the View -> Folder History menu. Anyone have any idea where it stores this information and how to turn it off? Why would it save this information anyway? This "feature" should be turned off by default unless a user wanted it for some reason.

Stored in the Registry. No way to turn it off.
Keys and Values:
"HKCU\Software\7-Zip\Compression\ArcHistory"
"HKCU\Software\7-Zip\Extraction\PathHistory"
"HKCU\Software\7-Zip\FM" /v "CopyHistory"
"HKCU\Software\7-Zip\FM" /v "FolderHistory"

Thanks. Is it likely there will eventually be a way to turn it off? If not, is there an alternative archive program I should use instead?

Hi,
This is still an issue today, 7 years after it was reported. Hell, I wasn't even aware of it and I've checked in the menus for any history entries during my usual audit. (Didn't think to look in View → Folders History...) I routinely disable all history in all my applications except my web browsers. But alas, 7-Zip has no such mechanism. Still, it is an excellent archiver so instead of uninstalling it, I used a workaround:- Navigate Regedit to the paths listed above by @fernando
- (Optionally) delete every permission you can for each of them, on the folder level.
- Add a new "permission" entry for Everyone;
- Deny All
Now 7-zip is unable to change or even read its registry. Ha! Not the most elegant solution, but until fine-grained controls are given to us this is the best we, security-minded people can do.

p.s.: Why on earth is spell check disabled on sourceforge!? I'm dyslexic, I NEED spell check to make myself understood.

Nice, fancy custom text editor you have there, sourceforge... Real nice... Too bad you broke spell check! Now give me back my plain textarea controls. I can write valid markdown without the help of formatting buttons and this fake live preview.

I agree. This is really a missing option for this tool. This is a privacy matter and a software should not register our activity without our consent.

Just to add, you could also sees the history of created archive when you Right click on a file > 7zip > add to archive... >
You'll see in the dropdown list in the archive name box. Which is harder to clear than the Folder history.
