_1:43 pm_[dyta93] "hoodoo" dolls I have been being drawn to make some dolls of different types ranging from ragdolls to corn husk dolls. While most of these I was taught the techniques frommy grandma, the one that is the newest to me are the ones that use sticks forarms and body with dried corn silk stuffing. I believe that these are morecommonly found down in the New Orleans area. Are the sticks from a particular type of wood/tree? Are there any gatheringrecommendations for those sticks? Also, is it common to use other stuffingmaterials/ingredients with the cornsilk?Looking more to compare notes with especially as this particular style is still new to me. (Comment on this)

_10:37 pm_[captkatsparrow] Oh bother... I was contemplating over a guy I've got a "crush" on while shuffling my tarot deck, and I threw out the King of Swords, the Three of Swords, and the High Priestess card (in that order). Use my head, keep myself in balance, but it looks like I'll end up in tears anyway...oh bother. Current Mood: contemplative (Comment on this)

_8:20 pm_[00goddess] Basil? I have a huge overgrowth of basil in my garden (it's up to my chin!) and a friend of mine who is a vodoun practitioner mentioned that basil has uses in vodoun. He said it's used in ceremonial baths "and stuff."So what would you use this stuff for? I know, google is my friend, but I am interested in what people in this community have to say, because y'all are more interesting than google :)I also have a lot of thyme :) (5 Comments |Comment on this)

_1:01 pm_[elorie] St. Michael protection I recently started this as a way to protect someone. I thought y'all might be interested.I bought three St. Michael candles (I intend to eventually use nine, but will buy them in batches). I burned some bay leaves for incense and dressed them with Fiery Wall of Protection Oil. Then I wrote the name of the person threatening them on brown paper and crossed it out, then put it face down under the candle. I also dressed a small sword (you can use a knife, I happened to have a letter opener in the shape of a sword) with cinnamon and clove oil and place it in front of the candle. As each candle burns down, I will light the next one. I intend to keep this up through nine candles. (3 Comments |Comment on this)

_11:40 pm_[cor_cordivm] yet another newbie Hello all, I'm cor_cordivm and I hail from North Carolina. I'm a semi-solitary, sorta-British oriented pagan with a research bent, and although my main work doesn't have much to do with Southern folk magic/spirituality, I'm interested in a couple of different threads of it. One, I want to find out more about the folk magic roots the English, Irish, and Scots put down here, as a way of informing my main work. Two, hoodoo, Voudoun, and Lucumi have fascinated me for years, and I just plain love getting to talk about them and listen to people talk about them. Three, I'm really starting to like what I've seen of Feri, and that it has some of its roots in hoodoo intrigues me.So: that's me! I'm excited to be here! (Comment on this)
_12:33 pm_[rio_luna] Another Newbie Hi and Ibashe-O!I'm rio_luna, new to your community. I've been serving the Orisa for about 15 years, via AfroCuban Santeria and Lucumi. I'm Cuban by descent but this is not a family tradition by any means.I'm not an initiatory path at the moment, and my contacts with the Orisa are far more tenuous than I would like. I'm hoping connecting with this community will be a bridge back.I became a witch during the 9 years I lived in North carolina. Altho I now live near Denver, Colorado, I have a deep connection to the Piedmont area of central NC, I literally fell in love with that land and my connection to it really fueled discovering my own path and power as a witch.Glad to meet everyone. _2:01 am_[purplealiean] Newbie Hi I am new, I am a 27 year old living in Grand Rapids, MI. I am currently studying Haitian and New Orleans Vodou and I would like to try to get into some Hoodoo as well. I am in it for the healing and good works part as well as strengthening my spiritual self. I am not initiated or part of any house or hounfor as there aren't any that I know of in my city.Anyways I can't really get into a long intro right now as it is late and I need to go to bed soon.I hope to learn from all of you and vice versa.Peace for now,K Current Mood: tired (Comment on this)

_12:36 pm_[anchasta] Gullah given money to preserve their culture - BBC News Its official name is the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, but what it represents is a lifeline to America's oldest African way of life. Known as Gullah in the Carolinas, and Geechee in Florida and Georgia, it's a multi-faceted language that blends African tribal dialects with mainly pre-20th Century English. It's also a coherent culture that melds African village life with the very different surroundings of colonial America, and the forced indignities of plantation slavery. It has existed on America's south-east coast ever since the first slave ships began arriving. Last year, Congress passed laws identifying the corridor, and established a budget of $10m, for the nurturing and promotion of Gullah-Geechee sites all along the coast. More here...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/ameri cas/6532403.stmWhoo hoo for preservation of their culture, unique and very special. (Crossposted to southernwitch and rootworkers) (Comment on this)
