Here is an open mic opportunity and another chance for you to get use out of that Halloween costume:
For our Halloween open mic this Thursday, October 30th we are throwing a costume party type event. The theme is "We All Wear Masks". Although you may read/play anything that you like, participants are encouraged to "wear a mask" with their poems and lyrics by reading poems by a narrator that is not the poet/songwriter themselves. You can read first-person narratives from the point of view of Mickey Mouse, a Toaster, your favorite pet, James Bond, or any other character known or that you have made up. If you can dress up for it on Halloween (or even if you can't) you can read/play it. There will also be treats available and small door prizes for costumes/poetry/songs/or pure randomness. Come on out and share your work. If you are shy you can wear a real mask, as costumes are highly encouraged!

The show will begin with an open mic so feel free to bring your own poetry, music, comedy, or other performance art to share. Donnie Darkhorse will feature at our regularly scheduled open mic along with music from Norman Oak and Dennis Ray Powell, Jr. The open mic will take place before the features and has been known in the past to include poetry, music, comedy, skits, performance art, and belly dancing. If you haven't checked out the open mic or Rachel's Cafe before now it is the time to do it. Rachel's serves food, coffee and tea, and beer and wine, and is known for their open non-judgmental atmosphere. This show is a don't miss to put on your list. It is also free and over by 10pm so you have time to go out for another show afterward.

This show is a week from Wednesday. There is one mistake on the flier as the address is really 359 Spring Street. It should be a good show. Donnie Darkhorse is a spoken word artist from Connecticut on a summer tour and Russ Allen (singer/songwriter) and Sheri Wright (poet) are from Louisville. There is also an open mic before the features. Perkfection also serves coffee, juice, chai, tea, and alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, and the hard stuff). Come on out, get a drink, share your work or musical skills, or other talents, or just sit back, relax, and support your local and national artists.
Everyone within spitting distance of Louisville should come to this poetry open mic. All forms of spoken word or original acoustic music are also welcome. It is free, the venue is all ages, and they serve both coffee and booze (even the hard stuff).

Well, the subject line is pretty self-explanatory. There are some nifty women's-issue related things going on in Evansville this month, and I'd like to pass on the word!
First, there is an event planned for March 20 on USI campus to rally for the prevention of violence against women. In the past, USI has participated in "Take Back the Night" with Albion Fellows Bacon Center, but this year they're hosting an earlier event, with intent to get men more involved, so the march is titled "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes." Guys have the option of doing the walk in flowered flip-flops, with a few pairs of high heels available (only a few because men's sizes in heels are expensive). And yes, of course, women can go too.
I think it's an admirable effort. It's hard to get men involved in this kind of march, because apparently a man showing compassion toward the violence-against-women issue is fodder for teasing. Sad world this is. I'm happy about this event, though. Hopefully there'll be a decent turnout.
Registration starts at 5, under the University Center bridge. The march begins at 5:30. Contact event coordinator Stephanie Walden-Schwake at 812-461-5269 for more info.
I'll keep my ears open for this year's "Take Back the Night" rally, too. I hope that, since apparently USI's not involved this year, they still have a venue for the rally.
After the march, anti-sexist activist Jason Katz will speak in Carter Hall (on the second floor of the University Center) at 7 p.m. He's also leading a workshop in Carter Hall from 1-4 p.m. titled "More than a Few Good Men: Strategies for Inspiring Men and Boys to be Allies in Gender Violence Prevention."
You bet your boots I'll be there for the march and the speech. Can't go to the entire workshop because of classes, but if you're in or near Evansville, I highly encourage you to stop by for these events.
And finally, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is having a free EC day! That's right, a dose of emergency contraception that usually sells for around $45 is going to be FREE on April 3. The Evansville center is on Weinbach, close to UE. I'm willing to offer rides to anyone in the USI area who wants to take advantage of this awesome offer, but doesn't have transportation to the East Side.

ok, the official word is in. my group is meeting at 10:30 at 5th and main tomorrow. we're joining everyone else marching to the Four Freedoms Monument with a banner that reads "if i have not love, i am nothing" as i mentioned in my previous update. We feel that this is the best way to go about things peacefully and respectfully. and i'd bet money that our crowd will be a LOT bigger and more impressive than theirs.

Published reports identified potential businesses locating in [New Albany developer Gary] McCartin's Waterford Park as Panera Bread, Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, Smoky Bones BBQ, Longhorn Steak House, Johnny Carino's Country Italian and Ryan's Family Steakhouse. Others include Target, Best Buy, Old Navy, Lane Bryant, Bed Bath & Beyond and Dress Barn. Hallmark, Subway, FedEx, Kinko's, Regis Salons and Smith's Furniture are additional potential tenants.

McCartin said all of the restaurants listed are definite and he stressed, "I've probably answered this question 12,000 times, but Olive Garden is a definite. They will be here either in Waterford Park or in the general area."
Yay! More chains! And we don't have to drive 30 miles to get to them! (I'm kidding a bit. Best Buy is the only one that really does anything for me.)

Guatemala Service Trip Summer 2005
This summer between June 10th and June 19th, you have the opportunity to travel to Zacapa, Guatemala with other members of the Louisville community through the non-profit, non-denominational organization Hearts In Motion (HIM).
HIM travels to Zacapa with dedicated nurses, doctors, firefighters and other volunteers throughout the year to “provide quality medical care to assist in the development of social programs to improve health, education and welfare of the people [they] serve.” For more information about HIM, check our their website at http://www.heartsinmotion.org
This service trip is open to anyone who is (currently) a junior in high school or older. Last year we had 14 people in the group - four high school students and ten adults ranging from college-age to mid-thirties. The goal for this year is to have about 20 people for the trip.
The cost is $1500 per person, which includes airfare, transportation, and most meals. We will do all the fundraising AS A GROUP, so that no one is excluded for financial reasons. This also serves to build the group dynamic before the trip. It does require a large time commitment leading up to the trip, but the rewards are well worth the time.
The informational meeting is on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 PM at Walden School, 4238 Westport Rd, Louisville, KY. If you are interested, please go to the meeting. If you know of anyone else who might be interested, please forward this on.

We won’t know exactly what we’ll be doing until we get there, but we will probably be doing some sort of construction work or possibly helping medical teams. Previous groups have built new playgrounds, built schools, and painted murals.

A rally/protest has been organized to encourage tri-state citizens to call their senators and urge them to oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment*, an amendment to the U.S. Consitution that discriminates against same-sex couples by prohibiting their marriage to each other. The FMA goes to debate in the Senate on Wednesday, July 14th.
The rally is scheduled for Monday, July 12th, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm (rush-hour). The location will be in Evansville, IN on Green River Rd. at Eastland Mall, by the Wendy's and the Chili's, across the street from the Family Christian Store. If we are told to move, our second location will be the wide part of the median in the center of the street in between Chili's and the Family Christian Store. Park in the back of the JC Penney parking lot, across from the Wendy's. (For directions, go to www.yahoo.com/maps/dd and enter "Virginia St. and Green River Rd., Evansville, IN" as your destination.)

Lastly, we need people to donate bottles of water. 12- and 24-pack cases are about 3−3-3−5 anywhere you go. It's going to be hot Monday, so we'll get thirsty pretty quickly.
Five rules for this event: 1.) No horseplay; 2.) No obscene or vulgar language or gestures in ANY way shape or form; this includes written, spoken, and unspoken; 3.) Be respectful to EVERYONE, including the media, and especially those in favor of the amendment; 4.) If we are asked to move from private property, we will move to the median in the center of Green River Rd., in between Chili's and the Family Christian Store; 5.) Have FUN and show your PRIDE!
