After reading this article you should be able to: Assess whether the patient is suitable for intubation with a fine bore nasogastric tube. Understand the safe and unsafe methods of confirming the correct position of a nasogastric tube. Discuss the safe administration of medication through a nasogastric tube. Identify the options available to prevent and remove a blockage from a nasogastric tube.

This paper explains how a group of mental health service users and carers formed a Research Development Group in Wales. This is a process paper which describes how the group was established and funded as part of the United Kingdom Clinical Research Networks. It explores the rationale for a Mental Health Service User and Carer Partnership Research Development Group and the challenges experienced in setting up the group, including activities such as a current research project. This project involves collaboration between group members and nurses from a local National Health Service Trust, which is helping to build research capacity. This project is used to illustrate the issues raised, and we provide critical reflections of this process. The power balances that posed challenges to a group of this type are explored and ways to ov...

The physical, psychological and social effects of alcohol are more severe for women than for men. The underlying causes of women's drinking differ from those of men, which poses a challenge to nurses working in the specialist field of alcohol misuse. This article explored women's relationship with alcohol and treatment services, and identified that these treatment services are not specific to women's needs. To conclude, in order to offer women sensitive services, practitioners need knowledge of gender issues.

However, Core Section 1 may be already completed if the Unified Assessment Process has been adopted. These core sections represent the minimum information required within an in-depth substance misuse assessment. These core sections represent the minimum information required by commissioners.

The qualitative paper chosen for the critique is a grounded theory design and the research terms and terminology associated with this method such as symbolic interactionism are defined. The published paper reported on findings from a study exploring the characteristics of nurses in abortion care. A published critiquing tool has been applied. It was chosen because it is pragmatic, clearly laid out and accessible as full text to the people likely to need it. It comprises two stages, the first of which centres on the believability of the research. The second stage is more detailed and examines the research process and establishes the credibility of the research in its application to practice. Develop critical and analytical skills through methodically appraising the merits of publi...

The aim of the study was to examine the variety, frequency and severity of stressors, to describe coping strategies used to reduce work-based stress, and to determine stress outcomes. Questionnaires were sent out to 614 CMHNs from ten NHS Trusts throughout Wales. The response rate was 49% (n = 301). The measures used included the Maslach Human Services Survey, the CPN Stress Questionnaire, the Psychnurse Methods of Coping Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the General Health Questionnaire GHQ-12. Community mental health nurses indicated that trying to maintain a good quality service in the midst of long waiting lists, poor resources, and having too many interruptions while trying to work in the office were particularly stressful items. The coping strategies that CMHNs utilized the most were h...

The second aim is to take the reader through the various stages of critiquing using a guide. In the paper, we explain at each stage the research terms that can deter the novice critic from reading and understanding the findings in research. From this we hope the reader will have developed an ability to do their own critiquing, so that they are better informed about the quality of research that influences nursing practice. In this paper we have taken a previously published paper on the effectiveness of clinical supervision and undertaken a systematic critique of the merits of this quantitative research using a recognized critiquing framework compiled by Coughlan et al. (2007). Our purpose was twofold: First, we wanted to demonstrate the various stages of critiquing a paper in order that the reader might make an informed judgment of the quality and relevance of the research. The reader/critic is then able to decide whether to use this research in their own practice. Second, we wanted to assist the reader to develop their own critical, analytical skills through methodically appraising the merits of published research. Nursing as an evidence-based profession requires nurses at both pre- and post-registration level to be able to understand, synthesize and critique research, this being a fundamental part of many nursing curricula. These have become core skills to acquire because implementing up-to-date evidence is the cornerstone of contemporary nursing practice. We have provided in this paper a template for critiquing, which is based on our combined experiences as academics specifically in teaching at the bachelor, master's and doctoral levels.
