HSE University Starts Cooperation with Leading Universities in Colombia

HSE University—Saint Petersburg

The delegation from HSE University visited the largest Columbian university—the National University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, UNAL) founded in 1867. It is a state university with nine branches across the country which trains 50 thousand students. The parties agreed to develop a partnership in the spheres of humanitarian sciences and the studies of foreign languages.

Along with that, HSE representatives visited Del Rosario University (Universidad del Rosario) founded in 1653. Being one of the oldest universities in the whole Latin America, Del Rosario University ranks among the top five best higher education institutions in Colombia. Russian and Columbian colleagues discussed an opportunity for faculty exchange, including the ones sponsored by Columbian national grants.

At the end of the visit, the HSE delegation visited the University of La Sabana (Universidad La Sabana). This is a private Columbian university founded in 1979. The parties negotiated further cooperation on joint research programmes in the spheres of IT, and physics and creating joint databases for research projects.

Columbian universities are strongly underrated in terms of the potential for development as well as cooperation, in particular in the research sphere as we are interested in developing the interaction. For instance, the National University of Colombia publishes several scientific journals indexed in Scopus. In turn, this expands our research opportunities.

We also can see serious cooperation prospects in the sphere of student exchange: Columbian students need international experience for further development, and HSE University is ready to provide a platform for this work. In their turn, Columbian universities are integrated in the system of international exchange and, thanks to interaction with HSE University, can provide a constant influx of students to Russia.

HSE University has the necessary competencies and expertise in Economics, Management and Finance as well as Philology, Physics, Mathematics and History. Columbian universities still maintain a high interest and friendly attitude towards Russian culture and history.

An important direction of the cooperation with Columbian universities will be teaching HSE students the Spanish language and joint development of Spanish-taught programmes for HSE University. It is related to the profound traditions of studying Spanish in Colombia.

This is the first trip to Colombia of such a representative delegation from Russia which gathered not only administrative staff but also professors and researchers. The Columbian colleagues prepared well for our visit: they are well-versed in HSE educational programmes and highlight their relevance. All these things were the first step of joint work which will allow Columbian partners to learn more about the opportunities of Russian education and our country in general.

During the academic mission to Latin America, the representatives of HSE University-St Petersburg visited the leading higher education institutions of several countries in the region to establish bilateral partnership. Such an academic interaction keeps up with the general tendency of strengthening and developing humanitarian ties between Russia and the countries of Latin America which are built on a practical mutually beneficial and mutually respectful basis.
