There has been a long-standing debate about the significance of extending school hours in many pa... more There has been a long-standing debate about the significance of extending school hours in many parts of the world. In Indonesia, an extended school time up to ten hours a day, the so-called Full-Day School (FDS), has been executed by the government for the last few years. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the program particularly on students' learning concentration. A survey study with the causal comparative design was adopted for this purpose. The study randomly recruited a 15-percent sample of students from two schools (one FDS and one non-FDS), while four teachers of English working at the FDS voluntarily participated in the study. Data were gathered through questionnaire and interview. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was administered to student respondents to collect data on their learning concentration. A semi-structured interview with teachers was conducted to elicit data on their perspective on students' learning concentration in classroom. Result of questionnaire data analysis has shown that the extended school time in FDS program brings no impact on students' learning concentration, it has diminished students' learning concentration instead. Teachers' pros and cons and two-folded views of FDS program and their students' learning concentration neither support nor oppose the program with its impact. Thus, the implementation of FDS can be considered fruitless and, therefore, not recommended. However, further studies with larger sample and that utilize observations are encouraged to see consistency of this research finding.

The use of digital media is one of the topics recommended in the Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM),... more The use of digital media is one of the topics recommended in the Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM), a teacher-independent learning platform and a benchmark in the implementation of the Curriculum Merdeka. In this study, the researcher used an artificial intelligence called a chatbot Kuki application. Chatbots are automated conversational agents that can interact with users in natural human language and provide support anytime, anywhere. Kuki is an embodied Artificial intelligence bot designed to befriend humans in the Kuki, formerly known as Mitsuku. The researcher first carried out pre-observation to show students' English achievement. The result is that students' English achievement is still in the low category. Mostly students stated that media in learning is a factor in low achievement. The objectives of this study are to find out: 1) whether the use of Chatbot Kuki can improve students' English achievement. ,2) students' engagement in applying the Kuki Chatbot, 3) Students' perception of the usage of chatbot Kuki and how learning steps are taken by using chatbot Kukis, and 4) The steps of Learning English by using Kuki Chatbot in the class. The research conducted Qualitative research by using two classes, namely Experimental and Control classes. Both of the classes are given a pre-test and post-test to see the students' achievement. The student's engagement is based on three dimensions: cognitive, behavioural, and emotional engagement. Student engagement is observed by an observation sheet; students' perceptions are used in a Likert scale analysis, and a validation test is performed to see the learning steps in using the Kuki Application. The result of the study is that there is an improvement in students' English achievement in experimental classes. The Students' engagement is active, and the perception of the students is positive. The English achievement of students in class IX of SMP 3 Alla Enrekang is improved.

In learning English in Toraja regional schools, bilingualism occurs in the process because full E... more In learning English in Toraja regional schools, bilingualism occurs in the process because full English in the learning process will make it difficult for students in terms of learning flow. The use of bilingualism in the classroom affects the learning process and this makes researchers interested in getting deeper data about its effect on the learning process. Based on these problems, this study aims to determine the effect of bilingualism in the learning process at SMA Negeri 3 Tana-Toraja and students' perceptions of it. This study used qualitative design using observation notes and interview as the research instruments. The research setting was at SMA Negeri 3 Tana Toraja with a population consisting of 2 classes in eleventh grade. In data collection, samples were selected using purposive random sampling, and class X1 A was taken as the selected sample with 30 students and 1 teacher as the interviewee. The results showed that students were very enthusiastic about the lessons presented based on observation notes. Furthermore, students understood more quickly and their vocabulary increased a lot with the bilingualism method, students feel comfortable in learning, eliminate their doubts when asked, and understand the lesson more quickly. It can be concluded that bilingualism in learning English makes it easier for students to understand lessons more quickly or to memorize new words in English.

The researcher tries to introduce an alternative media, namely podcasts. Podcast is one of interactive media applied to support learning process in the classroom in developing listening and speaking skills. A descriptive quantitative method was conducted by the researcher in this study. The population was the XI Grade of SMK 4 Sidrap. Due to this semester only consisted one intact class (20 students), the researcher used the cluster sampling method in deciding the research sample. The instruments that were used in collecting the data Liker's scale questionnaire. The result of the data found was analysed by using SPSS Application. The students stated interested in learning speaking toward podcast. It was proved by the mean score of students' interests was 55.40 and considered as moderately interested.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has impacted the continuity of learning in education aspects. This... more Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has impacted the continuity of learning in education aspects. This research aimed to analyze the challenges and the adaptative strategy of online learning for urban vocational school teachers and students during COVID-19. The research applied a descriptive qualitative design in supporting the data needed. The sample of the study was taken randomly from a vocational school in Indonesia consisting of seven students and four teachers in English subject teaching class. In gathering the data, observation and interview were used as research instrument and it was analyzed using Braun's thematic analysis. The data gathered revealed that vocational school students face some challenges when learning online in English teaching subject during COVID-19 pandemic and did the adaptation dealing with the situation. The interview exposed the challenge faced by the vocational school teachers and students during online learning covering lack of lesson understanding, low creativity in using learning sources, lack of psychological bond with the teacher, internet stability, lack of face meeting exposure, and learning accessibility. The adaptive strategy implemented by the respondents mainly link with technical stuff like stabilizing internet coverage, searching the learning resource more intensive, and providing learning module.

English language teaching and technology have been seen as interesting new research era. This article reviewed studies on ICT integration in teaching from ten different countries. The aim of this review is to analyze cross cultural findings in order to determine what factors might be best applied to the Indonesia situation to improve English language learning and teaching as well as types of technology might be best adopted for ELT improvement. The articles for the study were found through internet search engine, Google scholar and ERIC in the area of technology integration and technology tools in English language teaching. Thus, the data taken is carefully investigated using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The result of analysis showed that the integration of technology in teaching can improve the experience for students and teachers and improve learning for students.

Acknowledging prior knowledge on technology, pedagogy, and content of lecturers in this early sta... more Acknowledging prior knowledge on technology, pedagogy, and content of lecturers in this early stage of developmental research is assuming important as basic data for further steps in designing TPACK model-based instruction in teaching writing. Therefore, having investigation on TPACK literacy of the lecturers will complete the data needed in this study. This paper presents an analysis of Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) literacy among lecturers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare, Indonesia. In finding the data, the TPACK survey of Schmidt, Baran, Thomson (2009) was applied by having little modification on it. The main points on the survey were about Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), Content Knowledge (CK), and TPACK. In gaining the data, the questionnaire as the research instrument was distributed to lecturers in the English Education Department, and their responses were analyzed quantitatively. This research was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare, South Sulawesi province, Indonesia. The questionnaire results showed that the lecturers' levels of literacy on technology, pedagogy, content knowledge, and TPACK are on moderate stage. They can be categorized as good level on overall TPACK literacy, but need to improve in order to achieve better results by having more practice or learning workshops.

This research aimed to analyze the challenges and the adaptative strategy of online learning for urban vocational school teachers and students during COVID-19. The research applied a descriptive qualitative design in supporting the data needed. The sample of the study was taken randomly from a vocational school in Indonesia consisting of seven students and four teachers in English subject teaching class. In gathering the data, observation and interview were used as research instrument and it was analyzed using Braun's thematic analysis. The data gathered revealed that vocational school students face some challenges when learning online in English teaching subject during COVID-19 pandemic and did the adaptation dealing with the situation. The interview exposed the challenge faced by the vocational school teachers and students during online learning covering lack of lesson understanding, low creativity in using learning sources, lack of psychological bond with the teacher, internet stability, lack of face meeting exposure, and learning accessibility. The adaptive strategy implemented by the respondents mainly link with technical stuff like stabilizing internet coverage, searching the learning resource more intensive, and providing learning module.

English language teaching and technology have been seen as interesting new research era. This article reviewed studies on ICT integration in teaching from ten different countries. The aim of this review is to analyze cross cultural findings in order to determine what factors might be best applied to the Indonesia situation to improve English language learning and teaching as well as types of technology might be best adopted for ELT improvement. The articles for the study were found through internet search engine, Google scholar and ERIC in the area of technology integration and technology tools in English language teaching. Thus, the data taken is carefully investigated using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The result of analysis showed that the integration of technology in teaching can improve the experience for students and teachers and improve learning for students.

Acknowledging prior knowledge on technology, pedagogy, and content of lecturers in this early sta... more Acknowledging prior knowledge on technology, pedagogy, and content of lecturers in this early stage of developmental research is assuming important as basic data for further steps in designing TPACK model-based instruction in teaching writing. Therefore, having investigation on TPACK literacy of the lecturers will complete the data needed in this study. This paper presents an analysis of Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) literacy among lecturers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare, Indonesia. In finding the data, the TPACK survey of Schmidt, Baran, Thomson (2009) was applied by having little modification on it. The main points on the survey were about Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), Content Knowledge (CK), and TPACK. In gaining the data, the questionnaire as the research instrument was distributed to lecturers in the English Education Department, and their responses were analyzed quantitatively. This research was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare, South Sulawesi province, Indonesia. The questionnaire results showed that the lecturers' levels of literacy on technology, pedagogy, content knowledge, and TPACK are on moderate stage. They can be categorized as good level on overall TPACK literacy, but need to improve in order to achieve better results by having more practice or learning workshops.
